Medium rigid licence training is a driving course that is offered to individuals who would like to upgrade to operating vehicles with two axles. Learners get to obtain the required expertise, attitude and awareness needed for driving MR vehicles. Medium rigid vehicles are classified as: automobiles with two axles and have a gross vehicle mass of eight tones; towed trailers that weigh a GVM of not more than nine tones and lastly automobiles which fall under the light rigid class vehicles.

Medium rigid licence training is the most preferred upgrading course in Australia, since it incorporates simple procedures. The upgrading procedures are facilitated by a reliable gearbox configuration that is similar to light rigid and medium rigid vehicles. The training takes a maximum of three days or a minimum of one day; this depends on the drivers learning pace and previous experience.
Training comprises of both theory and practical sections that entails the following: road laws, road security, cabin check, defensive driving, vehicle positioning, gear changing, vehicle control, turning, lane selection and highway driving. Each skill learned is accompanied by its own endorsement test immediately after the training. During training, fully accredited RTA instructors train each student on how to apply the skills learned during theory lessons.

Medium rigid licence training in Australia is offered in both public and private driving institutions, which train and assess learners according to the RTA competency standards. Fully certified schools consist of accredited trainers who are both experienced and knowledgeable as far as driving skills. Participants who attend such schools obtain their RTA medium rigid licence after passing their MR driving licence test. These tests include RTA written test and the RTA road test. The practical driving assessments are offered by the regional driving agents who assess the vehicle class participants applied for. Participants who pass both tests obtain their medium rigid licences effectually.
