A heavy vehicle driver instructor is anyone who teaches how to operate a heavy vehicle for money, compensation or incentives. These instructors should have legal driving instructor’s license and endorsement on their driver’s license known as I endorsement. Instructors should obtain endorsements for each driver’s license he or she wishes to teach. Before attaining I endorsement, the tutor should be a holder of a heavy vehicle license for at least two years. The instructor’s course entails eleven core units and two optional assessment units for those who want to work in regions with a complete trainer’s assessment. The unit standards taught include: individual driver training plans, factors affecting peoples’ learning, road transport legislation, how to carry out in vehicle driver training, hazard awareness, how to respond to risky situations, risk deduction techniques, driving strategies, describing heavy vehicle dynamics and handling techniques, how to observe and analyse a person’s driving skills and ways of attaining the required performance.
A heavy vehicle driver instructor who completes the course successful is issued with his or her instructor’s certification and he or she can start off his or her career. It is highly recommend that the instructor maintains his license by carrying it during practise. Advertise your services according to the heavy vehicle you are licensed for. Ensure that you regularly take your instruction vehicle for an annual vehicle examination and that your vehicle consists of dual controls. Sign your name in the driver’s instructor’s license booklet and always notify the region department of transport if you either lose the booklet or change your address.
An individual who presents himself or herself as a heavy vehicle driver instructor should renew his or her licenses after one year from the date of issue. The instructor is expected to visit the driver and vehicle service centre or the regional agent for renewal. A renewal advice letter is always mailed to an individual two months before the license expires.
